Digital Transformation: Enabling Change Management Strategies and Performance for Nonprofit Organizations in Kenya
Abstract
This study examines the role of digital transformation as a strategic enabler of change management and performance in nonprofit organizations (NPOs). In resource‑constrained environments the organizations face continual challenges that include donor dependency, funding volatility and weak institutional capacity, and this makes adaptability and resilience critical. Drawing from the Technology Infusion Model and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the research employed a mixed-methods cross-sectional design. 368 questionnaires were distributed to registered nonprofit organizations, and 261 valid responses were obtained with both qualitative and quantitative, which was a 71% response rate. A pilot test involving 37 respondents examined the tool’s validity and reliability. Chi square analysis was used to determine the relationship between variables. Study results reveal that ICT adoption enhances efficiency and accountability, while automation supports process innovation and adaptability, data‑driven practices strengthen decision‑making and stakeholder trust. Change management strategies of leadership capacity building, Capability reconfiguration, stakeholder engagement, and communication strategies were amplified when supported by ICT adoption and data analytics. The study concludes that digital transformation strategies are critical enablers of strategic adaptability and resilience in nonprofits. Based on the results, the study recommends that policymakers and nonprofit leaders prioritize digital integration to strengthen sustainability and performance in resource‑scarce contexts.
